The West Virginia Young Democrats would like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the family of Senator Robert C. Byrd. As young people, many of us were inspired to enter into politics because of Senator Byrd. While he served in Washington for 57 years he never forgot where he came from. The values he internalized growing up in Sophia, West Virginia guided him throughout his life and his tenure in Congress. His philosophy dictated his view on life and politics: a sense of pride and duty towards his country, love of God, and devotion to his fellow man. While today we are sad knowing that Robert Byrd will no longer be with us, we take solace in knowing that now he watches over West Virginia high atop the hills of Heaven. Today we collectively mourn the loss of our beloved Senator, and humbly thank Providence for giving us Robert Carlyle Byrd.
